MobEee on Windows XP SP3

I finally gave in.

From the awesome Xandros easy interface,
MobEee on Xandros Easy mode
to the advanced mode
MobEee on Xandros Advanced mode
and now Windows XP.
MobEee on Windows XP SP3

The main reason for the platform change is for my phone’s PC Suite app. MobEee is about 3 times faster than our old desktop and it’s a better experience when surfing online via 3G on a faster unit.

Though there are two cons on this change; first is the diminished disk space on the main SSD and second is ASUS’ one too many programs running on the background. But those cons can be easily fixed because of the remaining USB slots and the SDHC card slot for more storage and the countless support groups for the Eee PC that compiled home-brewed packages of drivers stripped down to the core (yet to try).

Right now, I am really pleased with the change. Having 1GB or so left of free space, majority of the programs I got for MobEee are either the lite versions or the portable ones. Here’s my current program list and if you have some better, faster yet lighter alternative that you could suggest would be very much appreciated:

  1. Abiword Word Processor – great and lightweight document editor (still thinking over whether to get Open Office or not).
  2. AltDrag – for ALT+dragging those dialog windows that just won’t fit on the screen
  3. AVG Free 8.0 – yep, this one for now. Says it has an anti-spyware, not sure if it works though.
  4. CCleaner – to free up disk space after each surfing session, though I keep my histories.
  5. Filezilla Portable – the best FTP client I’ve used.
  6. FLV Player – for my archived videos from Youtube etc. (I download them instead of watching streaming content, it’s better that way).
  7. Foxit Reader – the best lightest of lightweight and bloat-free PDF reader around. Why can’t Adobe create something like this?
  8. Gimp Portable – for my image processing needs.
  9. Sony Ericsson PC Suite – the main reason for the change.
  10. WinRAR – for my un/compress needs.

All are conventionally installed to the main disk drive aside from the “Portable” ones stored on an SD card. It’s a short list but they’re some of the best. And I think it is very safe to say now that MobEee is a full-working UMPC companion.
