Four Plus One – Quatre

Three great ones, a documentary and just-an-eye-candy on the bunch.

  1. Ziyi Zhang, again. Beautiful to watch, agonizing to follow. Marvelous cinematography and tries so hard to make it seem like the other flicks under the genre.
  2. The Big One. Documentary about how companies “downsize” America. I like this one but sometimes Michael Moore is just full of himself.
  3. The Last King of Scotland. The life of a vicious (but not entirely heartless) dictator Idi Amin seen through the eyes of his personal Scottish doctor turned closest personal adviser. Based on real events on the 70’s at Uganda. With highly praised performance by Forest Whitaker, James McAvoy does deserves the same credit also. Very good and well-phased story. Some of the gruesome images were so real that it would really make you turn your head away at some point. One of the best historical political movie I have ever seen. One note, I think I have never seen a movie set on Africa that does not have blood on it.
  4. Notes on a Scandal. Filled with frustration, lust, lies, deception and revenge. A teacher and her forbidden affair with a 15 year old student. May be a taboo topic but it was a really great film. Judy Dench did such a remarkable performance; her yearning expressed on her writing and like a predator waiting for her opportunity to pownce. Some of the best elements on this movie are Barbara Covett’s (Dench) metaphoric diary entries and the score that was meant to convey Dench’s agenda. While I was watching this, there was this underlying suspense waiting to explode; creepy at times. Really good, if this is your ‘cup of tea’. But I like Earl Grey to oolong; so that is basically all of them. “Gold Star”.
  5. Shutter. Thai movie where a photographer is haunted by his past through his photos. As I promised (to myself), here it is. Predictable but has a great plot. Piolo Pascual was great on this movie. LOL No, he just awfully looks like him. Highly recommended for your horror flick itch. Have you been having neck pains lately?

[...] Alone (Faet/Fad). Straight from Thailand, from the team that made the Asian Horror blockbuster Shutter, (which I haven’t seen yet, but on my list for my next trip to the video shop Watched it. Here it is.) Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom, where a deceased Siamese twin returns and haunts her living sister. Overall, it was good. Great story. There may be quite a few cheap scares because of the sound but this has it’s few gems that I haven’t seen on other horror flicks. Scheduled for an Indian and American remake, I hope this won’t get butchered. Not sure about the Thai title so I put both that I found. [...]

[...] On to the cast, Anne Hathaway, pretty as always, was great. I read that she even learned to play the piano and had an accent coach to deliver the script well which was victorious IMO. And James McAvoy (fresh from Last King of Scotland) did a really good performance. And with James Cromwell, Maggie Smith and Julie Walters on the same movie, what else could you expect. [...]
