Mobile App Must-Haves

Because of the recent “acquisition”, I’d like to share my mobile application must-haves for an effective and geekier mobile internet experience.

Opera MiniThe Opera Mini browser. Truly the best thing that happened to mobile internet browsing. Compared to the one installed on my E730, everything is almost the same except for a couple of things. First, with higher resources, I can now see the effects on page transitions, though useless, is a good eye candy. And been doing a lot of surfing lately on my phone also and I haven’t encountered any “lack of memory” issues.

Another is the change of default search engine on the start page from Google to Yahoo! Search. I’m a Google user so this is bad news for me. Apparently, they signed an exclusive partnership with each other to be the dominant mobile browser and search engine on the planet. It looks impossible but I hope the users could customize what to use instead.

Gmail Mobile AppThe Gmail Mobile Application. It was not compatible with my previous phone so I was not able to try it then when it was first released.

But now, aside from the lack of adding attachments, this is the perfect mobile Gmail companion. Everything loads up quick. Very clean and intuitive interface. Syncs up with your account smoothly. Also lacks an auto-refresh, but doing it manually cannot be any simpler.

Yep, only two for now. Kind of short for a must-have list but I will update this once I get a hold of a great app. If you have suggestions, leave one here.

Don’t forget, you could still go to google.com from Opera Mini. :)

Yes, it’s a little thing I need to get used to. Before is just quicker though.

[...] A few days ago, Opera Mini 4 Beta 2 was released with numerous improvements. Among the long list of its new features, the best one IMO is the “Create Search” from search fields. This means that you can now create and add custom search on the Start page. Of course, I added Google search on it but when I tried to move the Google shortcut up the search list, Yahoo! is fixed on its top position, it’s because of that partnership I put here way back. But then again, it’s better to have that than no Google Search shortcut at all. [...]
